Strategic Plan

Introduction

The UC Master Gardener Program Strategic Plan (2011-2021) outlines our long-term vision and goals, ensuring our program continues to thrive and meet the needs of California communities. This strategic plan was developed through an inclusive process involving key stakeholders, including UC Master Gardener volunteers, UC academics, county directors, and program coordinators. By aligning with the broader UC ANR Strategic Vision, this plan serves as a roadmap for sustaining and enhancing our program’s impact over the next decade.

The plan addresses critical issues such as volunteer training, community outreach, collaboration with internal and external partners, diversity, and program funding. Our aim is to continuously improve and adapt, ensuring that we effectively extend research-based knowledge and promote sustainable practices across California.

Vision

Our vision is to support and encourage healthy communities and ecosystems through:

  • Sustainable landscape practices
  • Enhancing local sustainable food systems
  • Education on invasive and endemic species management
  • Improving the science literacy of our volunteers and communities

Strategic Goals

Our strategic goals are designed to ensure that the UC Master Gardener Program continues to thrive and expand its impact. They include:

GOAL 1: Provide consistent mission-focused training
We are committed to providing consistent, standardized, high-quality training for our volunteers and coordinators, ensuring they are well-equipped to serve their communities effectively.

GOAL 2: Support volunteerism
Empower volunteers, coordinators, and advisors with access to training, resources, and software. Providing guidance and oversight for volunteers that all use to thrive.

GOAL 3: Strengthen communication and advocacy
Increase the visibility and brand recognition of the UC Master Gardener Program. We aim to establish and strengthen collaborations with internal and external partners that align with UC ANR’s Strategic Vision and Initiatives.

GOAL 4: Evaluate impact and public value
Collect and report the impact of our program and recognize the work of UC Master Gardener volunteers through an annual reporting process.

GOAL 5: Strengthen internal collaboration and expand external partnerships
Enhance outreach through partnerships with UC ANR programs (CalFresh, 4H, etc.) Partner with mission-aligned organizations like CDFA and CalFire for more informed and impactful programming for Californians.

GOAL 6: Improve diversity, equity and inclusion
The UC Master Gardener Program is committed to reaching all segments of the state's population. We are dedicated to increasing gender, age, and ethnic diversity within the program, ensuring our outreach extends to under-represented communities.

GOAL 7: Diversify the funding stream
The statewide program is supported by the Elvenia Slosson Endowment. There is a growing need for centralized expertise, services, and resources - and the need to grow the statewide team.
