Fingerprinting (DOJ)

Fingerprinting and background checks through the DOJ serves as a pivotal component in ensuring the safety and integrity of the UC Master Gardener Program. For a program that deeply values community trust and is committed to providing safe, educational environments, fingerprinting helps in verifying the identity of volunteers and staff, ensuring that they have no history that could pose a risk to participants, especially minors. By incorporating this essential security measure, the UC Master Gardener Program not only adheres to best practices in volunteer management but also reinforces its dedication to creating a secure and welcoming space for all who wish to learn and grow in the world of gardening.

Volunteer Live Scan Fingerprinting Guidelines

When submitting a volunteer application, it's crucial to ensure the applicant receives the complete "Request For Live Scan Service" document, which spans four pages. For information on recommended Live Scan providers, including their rolling fees, operating hours, and appointment details, please visit the Department of Justice (DOJ) website at oag.ca.gov/fingerprints/locations. Keep in mind that details are subject to change, so we advise applicants to verify the information by contacting the service provider directly.

Volunteer applicants can complete their Live Scan fingerprinting at any authorized location in California. However, they must use the specific Live Scan form provided by us, which includes the necessary identification number, ORI number, and mail code corresponding to your county.

Applicants who have lived outside California in the past 10 years must undergo an FBI service level check, in addition to the standard DOJ check. In such cases, mark the "FBI" box on the Live Scan form before giving it to the volunteer. Remember, all applicants must at least complete the DOJ Level of Service.

The rolling fee for the Live Scan service, typically under $30, must be paid by the volunteer at the time of service. Please note, we do not offer a billing option for fingerprinting. Exceptions include the San Francisco area, where the minimum fee is $30.

Volunteers are advised to keep a personal copy of their completed Live Scan form for their records. It's not the responsibility of our organization to maintain this confidential document.

If clearance notification for an applicant who has completed the Live Scan process is not received within two weeks, please contact UC ANR’s Custodian of Records promptly.
