About the Event
Program: Every species of woody tree and shrub has unique qualities which is why we want it in our garden. Learning to perceive those qualities - the essence of a tree - can guide our pruning to bring out these desired characteristics. We will discuss the distinctive attributes of trees and shrubs to consider, such as their growth forms, trunk, branch and leaf shape or color, and flowers and/or fruit. Then we will discuss the Pruning techniques used to enhance these characteristics. Special emphasis will be given to the unique traits of selected plants.
Speaker: Grant Foerster spent his Bay Area childhood up a tree and has yet to come down. Along the way he has worked as a staff gardener at San Francisco's Japanese Garden in Golden Gate Park, received a degree in Engineering Hydrology from UC Davis, taught as part of the Merritt College Aesthetic Pruning series, co-founded the Aesthetic Pruners' Association, and served as its founding president. Currently he serves as the APA Education Committee Chair, and hosts a Bonsai studio. For the past 20 years he has run his own aesthetic pruning business with a focus on interpreting Japanese pines and maples and the gardens they reside in.
