Through Andrew's varied career, he's maintained a focus on public service. Prior to joining UC ANR, he co-founded a group of companies in Guatemala focused on landscape restoration in the lowland tropics. Projects incorporated the planting of heirloom cacao and native hardwoods using agroforestry techniques as well as support of the community forest producers of the Selva Maya, the largest contiguous tropical forest in the Americas after the Amazon. He worked previously in institutional timberland and renewable energy investment across Latin America. As a Mickey Leland International Hunger Fellow, he served on the monitoring and evaluation unit of multiple USAID-funded food security projects administered by the Adventist Development and Relief Agency. Before this he worked at MIG, a leading management, planning and design firm based in Berkeley on a variety of strategic planning projects. He served as a Peace Corps volunteer in the highlands of Guatemala where he learned Spanish and gained basic proficiency in Maya Kaqchikel. He grew up in Berkeley and is a proud alumnus of Berkeley High School. He enjoys gardening and exploring the Bay Area's many regional parks.
