A recent Nutrition Policy Institute research brief examines key findings from the implementation and impact of California’s School Meals for All program, which provides free meals to all public school students regardless of family income. The program has increased meal participation, reduced stigma, and significantly lowered hunger, especially for families just above federal income eligibility levels. Notably, NPI’s research finds that, regardless of household income level, eight of ten California parents overwhelmingly support the program. Foodservice directors and other school stakeholders also report that USM has improved meal quality, strengthened school finances by reducing meal debt and increasing revenue, and enhanced the learning environment. While challenges remain, such as the need for fresher meals and more time to eat, state funding and policy efforts are working to address these issues.
