When I look past the loose cows at my neighbor's farm, I see snow on the Sierra! Large bodies of water and snow give me a sense of calm. It is a nice start to a short week heading into Thanksgiving.
I continue to be thankful for the people and work of UC ANR. Last week's Town Hall was an example of what we have to be thankful for. I have shared previously that a good day is one where I learn something, am challenged by something, and help someone. Even when working remote, I can check off these boxes daily. No question, challenges have not been in short supply, but I wouldn't want a day without one.
While not without challenges, each of us has demonstrated that we know how to pivot (the word of 2020!). Who would have thought that ANR would conduct a legislative tour by Zoom? The one held on Friday was impressive. I can't imagine the elected officials, staffers, and committee staff weren't blown away by the work of UC ANR. We each continue to do new things and learn new ways of doing things we've been doing. And while we talk about Zoom fatigue, new data suggests that we can reduce Zoom fatigue by holding meetings with all cameras OFF. In addition, I recently learned that many elementary schools have disabled the private chat feature in order to avoid potential cyberbullying during classes. I had no idea that feature was available.
One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is a chance to help someone solve a problem, big or small. This week, I am meeting with a UC undergraduate student to talk through career path options and planning. Unexpectedly, I did the same last week of a Michigan State undergraduate student. It still seems a bit strange to not have a parade of students in my office this time of year, wanting to discuss spring semester options. I look forward to this rare occasion.
