Join us to learn about the native plants of
San Benito and surrounding counties.
We'll explore their biodiversity, beauty, ethnobotany and ecological benefits.
We can only imagine how diverse the flora of San Benito County was in past centuries. Luckily, remnant populations of native trees, shrubs, perennial and annual wildflowers can still be found. Some of these species are being brought into the Heritage Garden at the San Juan Bautista State Historic Park to help us all connect to the natural history of the area and for Indigenous reestablishment of relationships with their culturally important plants.
The ongoing development of the Amah Mutsun Native Garden is enjoyed by Amah Mutsun members and descendants of other local Indigenous groups. We hope to contribute to a rich history of important relationships with hundreds of native plants from these traditional territories.
As we continue to experience catastrophic fires and extreme weather events, tuning into the wisdom of local and Indigenous ecological knowledge can help us appreciate the gifts of the past and our responsibilities to the present and future.
Come meet, or reconnect with some of these marvelous plants in our midst, including locally native milkweed species. Learn about historical and contemporary uses of plants with members of the Indigenous community. We are grateful to have their participation at this very special event.
