Snapshot:  Mandevilla come in many varietals both evergreen and deciduous, vines or vining shrubs. They produce a showy, unscented flower featuring five broad lobes.  The flowers are trumpet shaped. The leaves are glossy and oval.  Plants climb by twining and will look amazing if trellised or allowed to crawl over and around fencing.  They require mild outdoor temperatures, but need heat to bloom.  In colder climates they must be treated as annuals or planted in pots which can be moved indoors or to a greenhouse for the winter.  Plant all hybrids in rich well draining soil. Frame, trellis or stake for support, pinching tips of young plants to create bushiness. Mandevilla is a low-maintenance plant during the growing season.  Mandevilla also attracts hummingbirds. Common pests include aphids, scale, mealybugs, spider mites and whiteflies.  Strong jets of water from a hose should take care of most pests problems.  Further protection can be achieved using a light solution of Neem oil.
