Aerobic static pile composting now underway at the Martial Cottle Park compost demonstration site in San Jose

If you like the idea of composting but aren't so keen on the labor needed to regularly turn a compost pile, aerobic static pile (ASP) composting may be for you. With ASP composting, a large mixture of organic materials is piled onto perforated pipes, through which air is periodically blown using a bouncy house blower.

A definitive summary of the aerobic static pile composting process can be found at this site maintained by O2Compost.

The ASP pile on the right, started in December, is composed mainly of horse manure from Garrod Farms in Saratoga, while the ASP pile on the left was started in January and is predominantly a mixture of manure and bedding from Sunset 4-H Farm located within Martial Cottle Park.
