Twenty years ago, the majority of diabetes cases among children and adolescents was Type 1.
But the growing incidence of juvenile obesity has caused an increase in the number of cases of Type 2 diabetes among children. If you do not control diabetes, this disease can cause kidney problems, blindness, cardiovascular illnesses and amputations.
Latinos, like other ethnic minorities, have a much greater risk of developing diabetes. It is a principal cause of death.
Here are some ways to protect your children from this disease:
- Encourage your children to go outside to play instead of watching television or playing computer games. Physical activity is the best way to prevent overweight and it helps physical and mental development.
- Whenever possible, join in physical activities with the children. You will be an example they will follow the rest of their lives.
- See that they eat less fat and sugar and, above all, less junk foods, like hamburgers, fries and soda. These types of food contribute to overweight.
- Get the children used to eating healthy snacks and meals, especially more fruits and vegetables, on a set schedule.
- Very importantly, see that the children receive regular medical exams. This is the best way to detect diabetes and begin treatment to prevent its devastating complications.
