Notes on Animal Showmanship:
Animal showmanship is a unique part of our county Field Day. To make the event successful here are some important considerations.
- We have a no live swine educational showmanship competition.
- Due to the Bird Flue affecting poultry we will not be having any live birds at our events this year. We will be offering an alternative opportunity.
- Dogs are expected to behave in a show environment. 4-H members should be able to maintain control of their dogs at all times for the safety of both dogs and humans. In the event a situation is deemed unsafe, participant will be asked vacate the area.

Join us for SLO County 4-H's BIGGEST event of the Year. This traditional event brings together our 4-H Members from all over the county for a day of fun, competition, and education. Youth will have an opportunity to participate in different division categories and participate in activates.

Participants enter a wide variety of still exhibits—including arts and crafts, baking, photography, woodworking, science displays, and more—demonstrating creativity, attention to detail, and mastery of project work. These entries are evaluated on both craftsmanship and presentation, providing valuable feedback and recognition for the youth’s hard work.
A focus of the day is animal showmanship, where members present their project animals and demonstrate their knowledge, handling skills, and care routines.
Showmanship categories include small and large livestock, rabbits, and other animal projects. Youth are judged not just on how well their animals perform, but on their ability to confidently and knowledgeably present themselves and their projects.
Beyond the activities and showmanship competitions, the event fosters community spirit, sportsmanship, and personal growth. It serves as a stepping stone for youth preparing for upcoming fairs and higher-level competitions, while also offering a supportive environment for learning and leadership development.
Activities Include but not limited too:
- Level Testing
- STEAM Activities
- Educational Mini Workshops
The 4-H Exhibit Day is a celebration of youth achievement, hard work, and the vibrant community that supports positive youth development in San Luis Obispo County.
