Planned Giving

Guiding Donors and Volunteers in Planned Giving

Teviotdale makes generous planned gift to ensure valuable outreach and education in the program continues.

As a Program Coordinator for the UC Master Gardener Program, you may encounter volunteers or donors who express interest in making a significant, long-term impact. Please let them know that the UC Master Gardener program accepts planned gifts, ask if they would like to learn more, and connect them with the UC ANR Development Services team.

What is Planned Giving?

Planned giving allows individuals to arrange a gift now that will benefit the UC Master Gardener Program at a future date. These gifts are often part of a donor's estate planning and can provide vital support for our program's continued success and growth. Planned gifts can include bequests, retirement funds, life insurance policies, and life income gifts.

Types of Planned Gifts

  • Bequests: Donors can name the UC Master Gardener Program in their will or living trust, designating a percentage, a specific amount, or the remainder of their estate to the program. This is one of the simplest and most common forms of planned giving.
  • Retirement Funds: Donors can designate the UC Master Gardener Program as a beneficiary of their retirement assets, such as an IRA, 401(k), or pension.
  • Life Insurance: Donors can name the UC Master Gardener Program as a beneficiary of their life insurance policy, ensuring that their legacy supports our mission.
  • Life Income Gifts: For those interested in more complex giving options, life income gifts like charitable gift annuities or charitable remainder trusts allow donors to receive income during their lifetime while ensuring that the remaining assets are transferred to the UC Master Gardener Program after their passing.

How to Discuss Planned Giving with Donors and Volunteers

If a volunteer or donor mentions their estate plans or expresses a desire to leave a lasting impact, this is an opportunity to introduce the concept of planned giving. Explain how planned gifts can help the UC Master Gardener Program grow and thrive for future generations. Emphasize that these gifts can be tailored to the donor's specific interests and intentions.

Encourage donors to consult with their attorney or financial advisor when considering a planned gift. Offer to facilitate contact with our Development Services team for personalized guidance.

Next Steps

If a volunteer or donor expresses interest in planned giving, connect them with UC ANR’s Development Services to arrange a conversation about their intentions.

If a donor has already included the UC Master Gardener Program in their estate plan, Development Services can help review the gift language to ensure it aligns with their wishes. Please remember to maintain a relationship with the donor, offering ongoing support and appreciation for their generosity.

By being knowledgeable and supportive, you can help donors and volunteers create a legacy that will nurture the UC Master Gardener Program for generations to come. Thank you for your dedication to making these meaningful connections!
