Aesculus × carnea (ESS-kew-lus × KAR-nee-uh)

  • European hybrid dating from 1858 AKA Horse Chestnut
  • Deciduous with large palmate (palm) shaped leaves with 3 to 4 leaflets
  • Long bright red fragrant flowers clustered 5” to 8” long in spring
  • Needs at least 5’ square clear area when planted and can grow to 40 feet tall
  • Seeds in rough husk (sort of like buckeye) are poisonous
