November is just around the corner

The trip to San Diego last week was good. I enjoyed seeing so many of our business personnel; about 10 total. And, I always like a chance to see the water.

Friday I had fun playing hooky at Yosemite. Despite the month, there were a large number of visitors to the park. I dare say, on Saturday there were crowds. The fall colors were far from what I recall from other parts of the U.S. but a nice change, nonetheless.

Now it is back to work. Today I met with two groups to talk about revising program structure to meet key goals of 1) more time for academic work and 2) greater support for program staff. Both conversations were really good. I'm optimistic we can make this happen, over time, and grow our programs along with support for them.

Keith Nathaniel participated in one of the conversations. We all know how great Keith is; now, hopefully, so does all of LA! Keith was recently interviewed by Voyage LA magazine. In the article, Keith talks about the downsizing of the 4-H program footprint in LA County. Somehow, Keith and his team make it work, despite no longer having 20+ community educators. Regardless, let's keep trying to get that number back! Be sure to read the write-up and learn more about Keith, including what brought him to UC ANR and what motivates him. He has a great story! And thanks, Keith, for sharing with LA the attributes of UC ANR's work!

Tonight I have homework. Assuming I follow through and do the homework, I have to practice three brief presentations. The hard part is that each slide is timed and comprised of pictures. I don't think in pictures. However, the method affords me the opportunity to make up the content as I go with few, if any, participants (other Goal Owners) knowing any different. There's always an upside.

Tomorrow afternoon I head to San Benito County. On Wednesday, Devii will lead a conversation with the County CAO about her vision for what UCCE could be in the county. Devii has constructed an exciting vision for the growing population of San Benito County that highlights the leveraging UC ANR brings to its partners. I am hopeful a couple of Supervisors will attend and be as impressed as I am with the potential.

Can you believe it is time for the Almond Short Course? This means November is just around the corner. I had a chance to attend the short course in 2017 but won't get there this year. I did, however, look at the agenda. The 3-day event is filled with UC ANR and UC Davis experts in all things almonds. Given the caliber of the agenda, I'm sure they will have a great turnout.

Maybe the fall colors continue to improve throughout November. I may have to try another trip to Yosemite soon, just to confirm.
